Plastic Solutions Fund

An ambitious plan to reduce plastic production and foster a reuse-based, circular economy

Each year, the world produces 460 million metric tons of plastic. In partnership with the #BreakFreeFromPlastic movement, the Plastic Solutions Fund (PSF) works to cap plastic production, phase out single-use plastics and accelerate a just transition to reuse systems.

Big Idea

Plastic is causing devastating harm to our planet and its communities. Massive changes are needed in how we produce, consume and manage plastic — especially those that are single-use — but with facilities around the globe on track to double plastic production by 2050, the problem is only getting worse. The Plastic Solutions Fund (PSF) has a plan to “turn off the plastic tap” and end plastic pollution across its entire life cycle, from fossil fuel extraction through to disposal. In partnership with #BreakFreeFromPlastic — a movement of over 3,500 organizations across 150 countries, many in the Global South — the Plastic Solutions Fund will activate strategic levers tailored to each region, supporting everything from bottom-up grassroots action all the way to top-down government and corporate engagement. United by a shared vision, grounded in environmental protection and social justice, PSF will show that when philanthropy and civil society align, they can deliver systemic change at global, regional, national and local levels.

Plan

Building on previous wins, from advancing the Global Plastics Treaty to piloting reuse systems around the globe, PSF and its partners will help the world reach a peak in plastic production by 2030 — and eliminate 70% of single-use plastic by 2040. Through their partnership with the BFFP movement, they are able to create durable systems-change, pressuring the global plastics industry at multiple points, which enables them to identify weak spots and double-down where needed. Through its grantmaking, PSF activates a set of interconnected strategic levers — grassroots organizing and campaigning, data and research, technical assistance, strategic communications, litigation and solutions-building — to secure ambitious regulations, scale reuse infrastructure and shift cultural norms worldwide. PSF will also shift power to those most affected by plastics, allowing communities to advocate for themselves and secure more sustainable solutions.
